Be the first

Welcome, first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni! We serve as your central hub for navigating life at IU Indianapolis as the first in your family to attend college.

The IU Indianapolis First-Generation Committee seeks to build a first-generation community to support, celebrate, and empower.

A pie chart showing that 30% of all students are first generation.

Nearly 30% of all IU Indianapolis students are first-gen. Are you?

So what is "first-generation?"

If you're the first in your family to attend college or your parents didn't graduate with a bachelor's degree, you're considered a "first-generation" student. You're also considered first-generation if you have siblings in college, but your parents didn't earn a bachelor's degree.

Being a first-generation student is something to celebrate! Being first can be tough, but we're here to help you succeed. Join us in being proud to say, "I'm first."
