The First-Generation Day committee was established in 2018 to coordinate the first campuswide event on November 8 to honor and to celebrate first-generation students, staff, and faculty. We held one campuswide event and invited departments and offices to hold events for their own students, faculty, and staff.
The committee expanded to coordinating First-Generation Week in 2019. This weeklong celebration ran from November 2 to 9 and featured a campuswide celebration, two featured movies, and over 40 department-sponsored events throughout the week.
IU Indianapolis (known as IUPUI at the time) received the 2020 First-Gen Forward recognition from NASPA. The committee shifted focus in 2020 to engaging and showcasing first-generation students, faculty, and staff year-round, in addition to coordinating the annual First-Generation Week.
